QuaSolo: a lean alternative to complete vision systems

QuaSolo smart camera with ring light above machined parts on a conveyor rail

QuaVis Technologies introduces QuaSolo, its smart camera for inline inspection. One camera head, one passively cooled compute unit, and a browser – no PC, no seat licence, no vision library to learn.

Many inspection tasks fall between a vision sensor that does one thing and a complete vision system that brings a PC, a licence and an integrator. QuaSolo is built for that middle: the sensor, the compute unit, the AI accelerator, the interfaces to the line and the configuration software are all in the camera.

An inspection is a flow of tools, not a program

Tools are wired from the frame to the verdict by drag and drop. Edge, line and circle finders walk a search box across the picture; construction tools turn their results into distances and intersections; a coordinate system tool puts every box after it in the part’s frame of reference, so the boxes follow a part that arrives shifted and turned. A tool whose input is not wired is marked before the run starts, rather than failing on the first part.

The flow: tools wired from frame to verdict; a tool that misses an input is marked before the run starts.

Measure, read, decide

Measured: edges, lines, circles, angles, grey values, distances in millimetres once the camera is calibrated. Read: bar codes, DataMatrix and QR codes, printed text by OCR. Decided: each measurement against its nominal, tolerance bands separate the result classes, and the worst class is the verdict.

Tolerances: each measurement against its nominal; bands decide the result class, the worst one wins.

Two AI tools, and nothing leaves the camera

Two AI tools use the on-device accelerator. The part finder locates the part and hands the tools after it a coordinate system. The looks-right check scores how closely a part resembles the good ones it was shown – taught by letting good parts pass the camera, so a new part is learned in about a minute – and finds what no specification describes: a scratch, a smear, a missing step. The camera runs a network compiled for its accelerator; it does not compile one.

Results on the line, operation in the browser

Results leave over OPC UA after OPC 40100-1, MQTT and digital I/O, with WLAN as an option. Operation is a browser on a PC, a tablet or a smartphone, with nothing to install, and the operator’s view shows the inspected picture, the values, the cycle time and the logged-in user. The number of products is unlimited, each with its own flow and calibration, and per-function permissions decide who may change what.

The camera head is small, robust industrial hardware from 0.4 to 24 megapixels; the compute unit is cooled passively, so there is no fan and no filter to change.
